Gamochaeta purpurea (Linnaeus) Cabrera. Common name: Spoonleaf Purple Everlasting. Phenology: Late Mar-Sep. Habitat: Prairies, woodlands, fields, roadsides, pastures, disturbed areas. Distribution: ME west to MI, south to s. FL and e. TX; apparently disjunct in CA and OR, adventive in w. US, Mexico, South America, and elsewhere.

Stems: Stems densely white-furry; sometimes bent from the base and then turning upward.

Leaves: Leaves basal and alternate on the stem; oblong-lance-shaped to spoon-shaped; 1/3-2 1/3 in. long; green and with cobwebby hairs above, white-furry beneath. Stem leaves may wither by flowering time.

Flowers: Composite flowers (heads) in a leafy, cylindric, terminal spike that elongates and branches over time; heads tiny, consisting of a group of minute yellowish- or purple-tipped tubular florets, packed tightly and surrounded by hairy, overlapping bracts that become brownish.
