Hieracium paniculatum Linnaeus. Leafy Hawkweed. Phen: Jul-Oct. Hab: Dry to mesic forests, especially along dirt roads. Dist: NS and QC west to MN, south to w. NC, n. GA, and OH.

ID notes: The leafy stem and lack of basal leaves of H. paniculatum readily distinguish it from our other species of Hieracium. In fact, it often puzzles the inexperienced botanist, who may overlook the possibility that this plant is a Hieracium! The milky sap and obscure teeth on the leaves are good corroborative characters.

Stems: Stems hairy at the base, smooth above, leafy; leaks milky sap when broken.

Leaves: Leaves alternate, sessile, lance-shaped, 2-5 in. long, slightly toothed, solid green (no purple veins), smooth; there are no basal leaves in this species.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Composite flowers (heads) on slender branches of a terminal panicle; heads 1/4-1/2 in.wide, consisting of 10-20 yellow ray florets with squared-off, toothed tips (no disk florets).
