*Ligustrum sinense Loureiro. Common name: Chinese Privet, Privy Hedge. Phenology: (Late Apr-) May-Jun. Habitat: Moist forests, especially alluvial bottomlands, and also in a wide range of other forests, woodlands, glade edges, etc. Distribution: Native of China.

Origin/Endemic status: E. and se. Asia

Other Comments: This species is one of the most noxious of all weeds in much of our area, choking out native vegetation. The rapidity with which it has engulfed southern wetlands (and increasingly uplands as well) is hinted at by Small's (1933) mention of it only as "an escape in southern Louisiana" and Fernald (1950) did not report from the area of his flora.

Synonymy : = Ar, C, Fl6, G, GW2, K4, Meso4.1, Mo3, NcTx, NE, RAB, S, Tn, Tx, Va, W, WH3, Hardin (1974), Nesom (2009a); = n/a — Il, Pa, Tat. Basionym: Ligustrum sinense Lour. 1790

  1. Please include your name and if possible, email in case when need to clarify what you wrote.
  2. If you opt out of including email, please be as specific as possible (e.g., which photo is incorrect?)
  3. Please do not submit questions asking to identify plants or about horticultural topics (e.g., how do I control an invasive plant in my garden?). Instead, those questions can be submitted here for the Carolinas region only.
  4. Please do not send us feedback about unkeyed species as this work is ongoing.
  5. Please allow time for flora edits to show in our next data release. We greatly appreciate your feedback but may require extra time to research complicated taxonomic issues.
