Horticultural Information
Intro: Erect perennial of freshwater tidal marshes and other open wet places, including ditches.
Stems: Stems widely branched, reddish-tinged, smooth or hairy.
Leaves: Leaves alternate, tapering to a short (or no) petiole, lance-shaped, 2-4 in. long, smooth or hairy.
Inforescence:
Flowers: Flowers solitary on short stalks from upper leaf axils, bright-yellow, about ½ in. wide, consisting of 4 rounded petals that soon drop, leaving 4 oval-triangular sepals nearly as long as the petals.
Fruits: Fruit a distinctive box-shaped capsule with a tiny pore at top; splits open when ripe, releasing numerous tiny seeds.
