Intro: Erect, rhizomatous perennial of wet habitats such as marshes, bogs, wet meadows and bottomlands.
Stems: Stem square (4-angled) but lacking the wings seen in M. alatus.
Leaves: Leaves opposite, lance-shaped to oval, sessile-clasping at the base, with serrate margins and reduced in size up the stem. Inflorescence none; flowers borne singly from leaf axils.
Inforescence: Inflorescence none; flowers borne singly from leaf axils.
Flowers: Flowers tubular, lavender to blue or pink, tube divided into 2 lips, the upper erect and cleft into 3 lobes, the lower spreading and 2-lobed; calyx also tubular and strongly angled.
Fruits: Capsules enclosed by persistent calyx.
