Pyrola americana Sweet. Common name: Rounded Shinleaf. Phenology: May-Aug; Jul-Oct. Habitat: Xeric to mesic woodlands and forests. Distribution: NL (Newfoundland) west to MB, south to NC, ne. TN, KY, IN, MN, and SD.

Stems: Stem a single flowering scape covered with dry, brown scales, rising from a small rosette of leaves.

Leaves: Leaves basal, petiolate, round with truncate to slightly wedged base, obscurely wavy or toothed, leathery and shiny-smooth.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers in a narrow raceme occupying upper half (or less) of scape, nodding on short stalks; white; 1/2-3/4 in. wide; consisting of 5 petals, 5 sepals, 10 protruding stamens and a pale green style curving down below the lower petals like an elephant trunk.

Fruits: Fruit a nodding, 5-parted, round capsule containing many seeds.
