Quercus oglethorpensis Duncan. Subgenus: Quercus. Section: Quercus. Subsection: Stellatae. Common name: Oglethorpe Oak. Phenology: Apr; Sep-Oct (of the same year). Habitat: Bottomland forests, upland oak flats over clays (Iredell and Enon soils). Distribution: Widely scattered from nc. SC, to adjacent ec. And c. GA, AL (Sorrie pers. comm. 2002), c. MS, and ne. LA.

Height: 40 ft.; width 40 ft.

plant sale text: The Oglethorpe oak has leaves similar in appearance to the shingle or laurel oak. The leaves are held through winter as they brown. The bark is scaly and gray. Our tree near the Totten Center is lovely in late fall and provides excellent shade through the seasons. This tree is not fussy about soil and may be found growing in poorly drained soils. The shape at maturity will be rounded in form, more irregular in youth. The genus Quercus supports up to 518 lepidoptera species.
