Quercus ellipsoidalis E.J. Hill. Subgenus: Quercus. Section: Lobatae. Subsection: Coccineae. Common name: Northern Pin Oak, Hill's Oak. Phenology: Apr-May; Sep-Oct (of the second year). Habitat: Dry to mesic sandy, acidic, upland forests or slopes. Distribution: ON west to e. ND, south to n. OH, n. IN, n. IL, and n. MO; disjunct in Carter County, MO. This species is distributed primarily in the upper midwestern US. Confirmed from one county in our area (Carter County, MO; J. Thomas 2631), which apparently is an escape from trees planted at a nearby Forest Service office (J. Thomas, pers. comm., 2022).
