Quercus ×drummondii Liebmann. Common name: Drummond Post Oak. Phenology: Apr; Sep-Nov (of the same year) Habitat: Upland dry oak and oak-pine savannas, open oak or oak-pine woodlands, and forest margins over deep sands, gravels, or (less often) clays. Distribution: Nc. to e. Texas, w. Louisiana.
ID notes: The widespread form of this taxon in the Post Oak Savanna belt and Lost Pines region of ec. Texas is a medium-sized tree that is generally neatly intermediate between Q. stellata and Q. margaretiae, with lateral lobes that are often moderately to strongly at ascending angles relative to the midrib. This form can locally become a codominant of oak savannas alongside Q. stellata and appears to represent a stable and morphologically consistent entity. The sporadic hybrids between Q. stellata and Q. margaretiae are typically also intermediate between the parents in twig diameter and pubescence of the twigs and leaves, but vary more in tree size and leaf lobe shapes.

Taxonomy Comments: Pending further study, the concept of Q. ×drummondii employed here tentatively includes both the more sporadic and variable (presumably more recent) hybrids of Q. margaretiae and Q. stellata found throughout areas of sympatry of both species, as well as the widespread, less variable and apparently more stable form found in east and east-central TX.
