Robinia hartwigii Koehne. Granite Dome Locust, Highlands Locust, Hartwig's Locust. Phen: Jun-Jul; Aug-Sep. Hab: Forests and outcrop edges on high elevation granitic domes, also clearings; disjunct in longleaf pine sandhills. Dist: Apparently endemic to a small area around Highlands, NC; and disjunct in the Sandhills of SC (Aiken County; Patrick McMillan, pers. comm., 2015); also in the Ouachita Mountains of AR, where seemingly native (in remote locations) (T. Witsell, pers.comm., 2023).

Origin/Endemic status: Endemic

Taxonomy Comments: While certainly related to and apparently hybridizing with R. viscosa, R. hartwigii seems worthy of recognition as a species; Wheeler (2023) supported species rank. The original spelling (Koehne 1913) is "hartwigii"; it is not clear why the orthographic variants (see synonymy) arose.

Synonymy : = RAB, S, Wheeler (2023); = Robinia viscosa Vent. var. hardwegii – Ashe (1922), orthographic variant; = Robinia viscosa Vent. var. hartwegii (Koehne) Ashe – K1, orthographic variant; = Robinia viscosa Vent. var. hartwigii – K3, K4, SE3, Isely & Peabody (1984), Peabody (1984); < Robinia viscosa Vent. – FNA11.2, W
