Intro: Erect, rhizomatous perennial of disturbed areas, fields, roadsides. Native to Europe.

Stems: Stems essentially unbranched, smooth.

Leaves: Leaves opposite, sessile or clasping, broadly oval or lance-shaped, 3/4-4 3/4 in. long, strongly 3-veined, smooth.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers in dense, oblong-pyramidal, terminal clusters; white or light pink; 1 in.wide; consisting of 5 spreading oblong petals with slightly notched tips, a green or red-tinged calyx tube, 10 protruding stamens and usually 2 styles.

Fruits: Fruit a cylindric capsule.
