Habitat: Longleaf pine sandhills, sandy woodlands, open hammocks, calcareous glades, alluvial sand barren grasslands, roadsides. Distribution: Se. VA and e. TN south to c. peninsular FL and s. MS.

Intro: Erect-ascending, tufted perennial of sandhills, sandy woodlands such as longleaf pinelands, open hammocks and roadsides.

Stems: Stems 1-a few, sparsely branched, hairy.

Leaves: Leaves opposite, sessile with winged bases (lower leaves may be petiolate), elliptic to oval or diamond-shaped, 4-7 in. long, toothed.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Composite flowers (heads) solitary at stem tips; each head consisting of 6-10 well-separated yellow ray florets encircling a flattish central disk of darker yellow, tubular florets. Each head rests on 4 large, oval bracts that collectively suggest a square.
