Trautvetteria applanata E.L. Greene. Common name: Ozark Tassel-rue. Habitat: Dolomite and other calcareous bluffs along rivers, moist streamsides. Distribution: E. KY, c. IN, wc. IL, and sc. MO south through e. and c. TN to nw. GA, c. AL, c. AR (Sundell et al. 1999), and ne. TX (Floden 2011). Populations far east and south of the Blue Ridge in GA, SC, and NC are tentatively placed here while under additional study.
Origin/Endemic status: Native
Taxonomy Comments: See Floden & Schilling (2018) for discussion. The epithet was originally spelled 'applanta' by Greene, but that is an apparent typographical error for an intended 'applanata' and is correctable.
Other Comments: The discovery of Trauvetteria in the edge of a calcareous savanna (Camp Branch Savanna, Brunswick County, NC) in the outer Coastal Plain of NC was surprising; the small population has since apparently been destroyed by intensive silvicultural practices. Trautvetteria nervata Greene, named from the Coastal Plain of s. GA, needs additional evaluation (Floden 2011); the type specimen is striking in its deeply and multiply divided leaf segments. Trautvetteria populations in the Coastal Plain of NC, SC, and GA and lowermost Piedmont of NC are tentatively assigned here on partial morphological and molecular data.
