Trautvetteria caroliniensis (Walter) Vail. Common name: Tassel-rue, False Bugbane. Phenology: Late May-Aug. Habitat: Streambanks, seepages, grassy balds, moist forests, swamp forests, prairies, very rarely in calcareous longleaf pine savanna ecotones. Distribution: Sw. PA and KY to n. GA, primarily in the Southern and Central Appalachians.

Taxonomy Comments: W. North American and e. Asian Trautvetteria has sometimes been considered conspecific with T. caroliniensis, but should not be so regarded. Additionally, T. applanata and T. fonticalcarea are here accorded species status distinct from T. caroliniensis s.s.

Stems: Stems branched, mostly smooth, erect.
Leaves: Leaves basal and alternate on stem, petiolate, kidney-shaped, to 14 in. long and wide, palmately lobed into 5-11 sharply toothed segments (reduced and sessile upward).

Flowers: Flowers in a flat- to round-topped, short-branched terminal cluster; white to greenish; 1/2-1 in. wide; consisting of 4 (sometimes 3 or 5) petal-like sepals and numerous long, white stamens clustered around a bright green, compound ovary.
Fruits: Fruit a cluster of plump, curved-beaked, fleshy seeds.
