Trifolium reflexum Linnaeus. Buffalo Clover. Phen: Apr-Jul. Hab: Open woodlands, woodland edges, dry shaly places. Dist: NJ, PA, OH, IN, IL, IA, and se. NE south to FL, AL, MS, LA, and e. TX. This species appears to have declined very significantly in recent decades across most or all of its distribution.

Intro: Erect to ascending annual/biennial of open woodlands, woodland edges and dry habitats over limestone and shale.

Stems: Stems branching from the base, smooth but hairy toward the summit.

Leaves: Leaves alternate; on petioles with a pair of hairy stipules at the base; divided into 3 oval leaflets, each 1/2-1 in. long, (usually) hairy and very finely toothed.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers in stalked, rounded heads, about 1 in. wide, at stem ends and from upper leaf axils; white tinged with green (becoming pink then brown); about 1/2 in. long; bilaterally symmetric, with typical pea-flower shape; starting out erect but eventually spreading.
