Horticultural Information

Intro: Erect perennial of rich forests and floodplains, over calcareous materials such as coquina limestone (marl) or on shell middens.

Stems: Stems stout, unbranched, green to reddish-green, smooth.

Leaves: Leaves 3 in a whorl at top of stem, sessile, broadly oval, 3-6 in. long, with dark and light green mottling, smooth.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flower solitary at top of stem in center of leaf whorl; sessile; maroon or yellow; 1 1/2-2 3/4 in. long; consisting of 3 erect narrow petals that are tapered at the base, 3 spreading narrow, green or maroon sepals, 6 dark maroon anthers and a dark purple ovary.

Fruits: Fruit a dark purple, 3-celled, fleshy capsule resembling a berry.

Comments: Flower with a spicy-fruity fragrance.

Height: 5-16 in.
