not marked as a favorite taxon Trillium pusillum Michaux var. monticulum Bodkin & Reveal. Common name: Appalachian Least Trillium. Habitat: Dry to dry-mesic forests and woodlands, moist forests along small mountain streams. Distribution: Endemic to nw. VA, e. WV, and w. MD.

Taxonomy Comments: Var. monticulum Bodkin & Reveal has been controversial; see Cabe (1995) and Cabe & Werth (1995) for additional discussion of variation within T. pusillum in Virginia and elsewhere. The epithet was spelled "monticulum", and is not 'correctable' to "monticola"; "the substantive suffix '-culum' is used as a diminutive with third declension nouns like 'mons', and is not the same as the suffix '-cola' " (M. Schori, pers.comm., 2002).

Other Comments: Petals white to pink.
