*Anthoxanthum Linnaeus. Common name: Vernal Grass.
A genus of about 10 species (as here circumscribed to exclude Hierochloe) and Ataxia), perennials and annuals, of temperate and Mediterranean Eurasia. Tucker (1996), Soreng et al. (2003), and Allred & Barkworth in FNA (2007a) all include Hierochloe into a more broadly circumscribed Anthoxanthum, but this has been challenged and now appears premature or unwise. We here follow a circumscription that accepts Anthoxanthum s.s., Hierochloe, and Ataxia (which does not occur in our area).
Subfamily: Pooideae. Tribe: Poeae (CHLOROPLAST GROUP 1 Aveneae type). Subtribe: Anthoxanthinae. supertribe: Poodae. clade: "BOP".References: Allred & Barkworth (2007) In Flora of North America Editorial Committee (2007a); Soreng et al. (2003); Tucker (1996). Show full citations.
