*Eichhornia Kunth. Common name: Water Hyacinth.
A genus of 7-8 species, native of tropical America and Africa, but now introduced widely in warm regions. Pellegrini, Horn, & Almeida (2018) prefer to include Eichhornia in Pontederia, and place the three species in our broader area in three subgenera of Pontederia: Pontederia crassipes in subgenus Oshunae M. Pellegrini & C. Horn, Pontederia paniculata in subgenus Cabanisia (Klotzsch ex Schlechtendal) M. Pellegrini & C. Horn, and Pontederia azurea in subgenus Eichhornia (Kunth) M. Pellegrini & C. Horn. Haines (2020b) takes the alternate approach of recognizing the subgenera at species rank.
