Hepatica P. Miller. Subfamily: Ranunculoideae. Tribe: Anemoneae. Common name: Hepatica, Liverleaf.
A genus of 7-12 species, perennial herbs, of Eurasia and e. North America. Although Hoot, Meyer, & Manning (2012), Hoot, Reznicek, & Palmer (1994), and others argued that Hepatica should be included in Anemone, a series of later papers cast doubt on that course; it now seems best to leave (or return) Hepatica to generic rank, pending additional research. Mosyakin & de Lange (2018) provide a succinct discussion of the need to split Anemone and the approach here taken, following them and Mosyakin (2016, 2018).
