Anemonastrum Holub. Subfamily: Ranunculoideae. Tribe: Anemoneae. Common name: Anemonastrum.

A genus of about 35-40 species, perennial herbs, of the temperate and boreal Northern Hemisphere. Anemonastrum is sister to Clematis, and thus cannot be treated as part of Anemone unless Clematis is also included in Anemone. Mosyakin & de Lange (2018) provide a succinct discussion of the need to split Anemone and the approach here taken, following them and Mosyakin (2016, 2018). Our single eastern North American species is placed in section Anemonidium (Spach) Mosyakin (Mosyakin 2016).
