Vitis Linnaeus. Tribe: Viteae. Common name: Grape.
A genus of about 70 species, vines, of temperate regions of Eurasia and North America. A newly discovered species in e. Mexico should be recognized in a new subgenus, whose relationships to Vitis subg. Vitis and Vitis subg. Muscadinia are complex and uncertain (J. Wen, pers.comm., 2024). This relationship makes the separation of Muscadinia at genus rank more problematic, so we move to recognition of Muscadinia as a distinctive subgenus of Vitis.
