Glyceria striata (Lamarck) A.S. Hitchcock var. stricta (Lamson-Scribner) Fernald. Phenology: Jun-Sep. Habitat: Wet meadows. Distribution: NL (Labrador) west to AK, south to Long Island (?), IL, IA, SD, and n. Mexico (?).

Glossary (beta!)

Origin/Endemic status: Native

Taxonomy Comments: There seems to be a lack of consensus on the legitimacy of this taxon even at varietal rank, and its associated distribution. Fernald (1950) describes this taxon as occurring primarily in Canada, but also south to Long Island, Illinois and Iowa and even n. Mexico. Gleason and Cronquist (1992) describe this taxon as "a smaller, stricter form of the northern part of the range, the lemmas usually purplish and with distinctly scarious tip". Other authors (Barkworth and Anderton 2007; Haines 2011; Werier 2017) synonymize within a broader G. striata, the first of which does mention this taxon as apparently having a more western distribution than the more eastern G. striata var. striata. Through the years, botanists have clearly recognized something distinct about various plants of G. striata throughout its extensive range, but more work is needed to pin down its potential separation in ecology, morphology, and particularly distribution, from G. striata var. striata.
