Stems: Stems sparsely branched and smooth (younger parts may be covered with fine soft hairs).
Leaves: Leaves alternate to nearly opposite, with slightly winged petioles, oval to lance-shaped with asymmetric bases, to 5 in. long (usually 2-3 in.), entire or slightly wavy-margined, smooth or with minute soft hairs above, and hairs restricted to veins beneath.
Inforescence:
Flowers: Flowers solitary, drooping from leaf axils and divergent stems; yellow or yellowish green with purplish centers; 1/2-1 in. wide; funnel-shaped with 5 very shallow lobes, 5 fused sepals with triangular tips and 5 stamens with blue and yellow anthers.
Fruits: Fruit a yellowish, reddish or purple round berry enclosed by an expanded calyx, which matures to a papery husk.
