Tilia americana Linnaeus var. caroliniana (P. Miller) Castiglioni. Common name: Southern Basswood, Carolina Basswood. Phenology: (Apr-) Jun-Jul; Jul-Aug. Habitat: Mesic forests, in the outer Coastal Plain usually associated with shell deposits, Indian shell middens, or underlying coquina limestone ("marl"). Distribution: NC south to c. peninsular FL and west to OK and c. TX.

Taxonomy Comments: Pigott (2012) splits this entity into two taxa, each recognized at subspecific rank under T. caroliniana.
