*Zea mays Linnaeus ssp. mexicana (Schrader) H.H. Iltis. Common name: Chalco Teosinte, Nobogame Teosinte. Phenology: May-Sep. Habitat: Fields, other disturbed areas. Distribution: Reported for AL (Kartesz 1999) and FL (Hansen & Wunderlin 2006).
Origin/Endemic status: Neotropics
Other Comments: HC state that this taxon is "occasionally cultivated in the Southern States for green forage" and is similar to Z. perennis, except in being, like Z. mays ssp. mays, a coarse annual. It is considered to be an ancestor of Zea mays.
