not marked as a favorite taxon *Zea mexicana (Schrader) Kuntze. Common name: Chalco Teosinte, Nobogame Teosinte. Phenology: May-Sep. Habitat: Fields, other disturbed areas. Distribution: Native of Mexico. Reported for Alabama (Kartesz 1999) and Florida (Hansen & Wunderlin 2006).

Other Comments: HC state that this taxon is "occasionally cultivated in the Southern States for green forage" and is similar to Z. perennis, except in being, like Z. mays ssp. mays, a coarse annual. It is considered to be an ancestor of Zea mays.
