Acer saccharum Marshall var. schneckii Rehder. Common name: Schneck's Maple, Sugar Maple, Southern Hard Maple, Rock Maple. Phenology: Apr-Jun; Jun-Sep. Habitat: Dry, dry-mesic, and mesic forests over calcareous substrates. Distribution: Acer saccharum var. schneckii Rehder is poorly understood, and may be distributed from sw. PA, s. OH, s. IN, s. IL, MO, south to nw. GA, n. AL, n. MS, sw. AR, and e. and c. OK.
Origin/Endemic status: Native
Taxonomy Comments: The taxonomy of this entity (recognition and appropriate rank) and distribution remain unclear. It appears to be a taxon distributed mostly or strictly below the glacial boundary, and overlapping but extending further south than A. saccharum var. saccharum. The two co-occur, seem to be phenologically offset, and morphologically relatively, though semi-cryptically, differentiated – suggesting that they may be semi-cryptic species. They need assessment rangewide, and using the suite of modern tools. It is hoped that the provisional recognition of this taxon will trigger research.
