Stems: Stems branching only in upper reaches, light-green, smooth.

Leaves: Leaves alternate, petiolate (petioles and blades reduced upward), 3/4-2 1/2 in. long, palmately divided into 3-5 narrowly oblong-oval leaflets with sharply toothed margins, smooth.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers in compound umbels (to 2 1/2 in. wide) on grooved stalks at stem ends, each umbellet pom-pom-like and consisting of 3 "perfect" flowers and 1-15 male/staminate flowers, all on short stalks; greenish-white, with 5 tiny petals and 5 shorter sepals, and in the perfect flowers, a prominent ovary covered in rows of hooked bristles.

Fruits: Fruit a round, burlike, cluster of 2 bristly seeds, 1/8 in. long.
