Taxonomy Comments: S. asteriscus var. asteriscus, in this narrow sense, is a taxon primarily found from the Appalachian Mountains eastward. Most records west of the Appalachian Mountains are generally referable to S. asperrimum, S. radula, or S. asteriscus var. latifolium.

Starry rosinweed is particularly drought-tolerant, once its roots have are well established. This species is found growing at the edge of woods, and in old fields and pastures in the lower and middle piedmont of North Carolina.
