Malpighiaceae A.L. de Jussieu. Common name: Malpighia Family.

Key to Malpighiaceae

A family of about 75 genera and 1300 species, herbs, lianas, shrubs, and trees, of the Neotropics and Paleotropics.

ID notes: Malpighia flowers are recognized by their 5 clawed petals, the bases (proximal) thin and tapered dramatically from the distal portions. The (posterior) flag petal often differs somewhat from the other 4 petals in size or shape. The sepals are often reduced in size and (typically) bear two fleshy glands.
