Conocarpus erectus Linnaeus. Common name: Buttonwood, Button Mangrove. Phenology: Jan-Dec. Habitat: Tidal swamps, coastal woodlands, and interior into calcareous habitats including pine rocklands, marl prairies. Distribution: N. Florida peninsula southwards (from Volusia County on the east coast and Levy County on the west coast) to s. Florida; widespread in the Neotropics north to s. Texas (Nueces, Willacy, and Cameron counties); West Indies; equatorial w. Africa.

Taxonomy Comments: Conocarpus erectus var. sericeus has densely pubescent leaf abaxial surfaces; it appears to be merely a form.
