Orthilia secunda (Linnaeus) House. Common name: Sidebells, One-sided Shinleaf, One-sided Pyrola. Phenology: Jun-Jul; Jul-Sep. Habitat: Forests under Pinus virginiana, other dry, oak, pine, or oak-pine forests. Distribution: Circumboreal, in North America south to VA, IN, IA, NE, NM, AZ, and CA; disjunct in Mexico and Guatemala.

Stems: Stem a single smooth flowering scape rising from a small rosette of leaves and bending just below the flowers.

Leaves: Leaves basal and essentially whorled, petiolate, round to elliptical, 3/4-1 1/2 in. long, entire to finely toothed, evergreen, smooth and shiny.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers in a one-sided raceme bent nearly horizontal to the ground; cream-white to greenish-white; 1/4-3/8 in. long; urn-shaped with a straight, stout, green style protruding.

Fruits: Fruit a flattened-round capsule.
