Smallanthus uvedalia (Linnaeus) Mackenzie. Common name: Bearsfoot, Leafcup. Phenology: Jul-Oct. Habitat: Moist forests, bottomland forests, and disturbed places. Distribution: NY, s. MI, IL, MO, and se. KS south to c. peninsular FL and c. TX.

Origin/Endemic status: Native

Taxonomy Comments: Smallanthus uvedalia is here provisionally treated as an e. North American endemic; it is sometimes circumscribed more broadly, with a range then extending through e. Mexico and n. Central America to Panama. Within e. United States, S. uvedalia has sometimes been separated into varieties within our region (see synonymy); further study is warranted, but Wells (1969) did not consider them to warrant recognition. The epithet retains the spelling 'uvedalia' regardless of the grammatical gender of the genus, as it is a pre-Linnaean genus name honoring Robert Uvedale (1642-1722) and its use as a specific epithet is as a noun in apposition.
