Ribes Linnaeus. Common name: Currant, Gooseberry.
A genus of 150-200 species, temperate, of the Northern Hemisphere and montane South America. The genus is separated into distinctive subgenera, these sometimes maintained as full genera (as by Small 1933). Phylogenetic studies suggested that recognition of Grossularia as a genus distinct from Rib is not warranted, though it does form a monophyletic group nested within Rib s.l. (Senters & Soltis 2003; Weigend, Mohr, & Motley 2002). Various species are cultivated for their berries, but the dried "currants" commonly available in stores are actually raisins made from a small variety of grape, and have nothing to do with Rib.

See something missing or incorrect about Ribes? Let us know here:
- Please include your name and if possible, email in case when need to clarify what you wrote.
- If you opt out of including email, please be as specific as possible (e.g., which photo is incorrect?)
- Please do not submit questions asking to identify plants or about horticultural topics (e.g., how do I control an invasive plant in my garden?). Instead, those questions can be submitted here for the Carolinas region only.
- Please do not send us feedback about unkeyed species as this work is ongoing.
- Please allow time for flora edits to show in our next data release. We greatly appreciate your feedback but may require extra time to research complicated taxonomic issues.
