*Agave sisalana Perrine. Common name: Sisal, Sisal-hemp. Phenology: Feb-Sep. Habitat: Coastal hammocks and dune, and other disturbed areas. Distribution: Native of Mexico, introduced in peninsular FL.
Origin/Endemic status: Mexico
Taxonomy Comments: Agave sisalana is a pentaploid cultivated for its fiber. This species was introduced to Florida in the 1830s by Dr. Henry Perrine. A. sisalana is favored to produce fiber because of its usual lack of marginal spines. Occasionally, a leaf with a few marginal spines can be found on a rosette where all other leaves are entire. As with A. desmettiana, capsules and seeds of this species are unknown. It is probable it is an anciently selected cultivar that now persists only by vegetative means. See Frank (2012).
