ASTERACEAE

Borrichia frutescens (Linnaeus) A.P. de Candolle. Common name: Silver Seaside Oxeye. Phenology: Jan-Dec. Habitat: Salt and brackish marshes. Distribution: E. MD and e. VA south to s. FL, west to TX and Mexico (Gulf Coast to the Yucatan peninsula); Bahamas (Grand Bahama); Bermuda.

ID notes: This species often forms nearly pure, clonal stands of many hectares, conspicuous from the fleshy, gray-green leaves.

Horticultural Information

Intro: Erect, bushy, colony-forming perennial of salt and brackish marshes, overwash flats, salt flats and disturbed tidal shores.

Stems: Stems profusely branched, succulent, usually densely gray-hairy.

Leaves: Leaves opposite, spoon-shaped to lance-elliptic, to 3 in. long, succulent, occasionally toothed near the base, gray-green, hairy on both surfaces.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Daisy-like composite flowers (heads) held on stalks at ends of branches; heads about 2/3 in. wide, consisting of 12-30 short, yellow ray florets encircling a central disk of tiny, yellow tubular florets interspersed with spiny bracts. A series of small, green bracts surrounds the base of each head.

Fruits: Fruit a somewhat flattened, triangular seed; many seeds are packed into the brown, spiny, burr-like remains of the flower head.
