Ceratophyllum australe Grisebach. Phenology: May-Sep. Habitat: Ponds, pools, slow-moving streams, solution holes in pine rocklands. Distribution: Se. NC south to s. FL and Panhandle FL, and in the West Indies; also in s. Mexico, Central America, n. South America, with apparent disjunctions in c. South America and the Galapagos Islands

Origin/Endemic status: Native

Taxonomy Comments: Les treated this taxon as a subspecies of the Old World C. muricatum. Because of their allopatric distribution on separate continents and relative morphological distinctiveness (as shown by Les), we prefer to recognize them at the species rank.
