Chaerophyllum procumbens (Linnaeus) Crantz. Common name: Common Spreading Chervil. Phenology: Late Mar-Apr; Apr-May. Habitat: Alluvial forests, moist slope forests. Distribution: NY and s. ON to MI, s. WI, and e. NE, south to GA, n. peninsular FL (Alachua County), AR, and OK.

Leaves: Leaves alternate, on petioles with sheathing bases, oval in outline, 1-4 1/2 in. long, finely divided (3 times pinnately compound) into many narrowly elliptic segments, smooth or with some hairs on nerves and margins.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers in compound umbels from leaf axils, each umbel with about 3 umbellets, white, less than 1/8 in. wide, with 5 spreading, rounded petals.

Fruits: Fruit a joined pair of elliptic-oblong, ridged seeds.

Comments: Scent when crushed resembles parsley.

Height: 6-18 in.
