*Dactylis glomerata Linnaeus. Common name: Orchard Grass, Cock's-foot. Phenology: Apr-Oct. Habitat: Pastures, fields, woodland edges, roadsides. Distribution: Native of Eurasia.
Origin/Endemic status: Eurasia
Taxonomy Comments: In Europe there are various races, differing in chromosome number, morphology, and distribution, often accorded subspecies or species status. POWO (2024) recognized 20 subspecies. The status of these entities in North America has been little investigated; yet considerable variation is apparent. Haines (2011) reports that only tetraploids have been found in New England. See various references cited in Tucker (1996) for further information about these taxa in Europe.
