Intro: Erect to reclining (with age) annual of roadsides, fields, waste places and disturbed ground. Native of Europe.

Stems: Stems with a few branches, hairy.

Leaves: Leaves alternate, petiolate below and sessile above, to 3 in. wide, divided into 3-5 lobes/leaflets that are further divided into finely linear segments, resulting in a lacy appearance; slightly hairy-silky.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers in dense terminal racemes to 1 ft. tall; blue-purple (occasionally whitish or pinkish); about 2 in. wide; consisting of 5 petal-like sepals, the upper one forming a hood in front and a hairy, upward-curving spur in back, while the middle and lower sepals are rounded and spreading. There are 4 less showy, united petals in the center of the flower that cover stamens and carpel.

Fruits: Fruit a hairy, ellipsoid follicle.
