not marked as a favorite taxon Desmodium strictum (Pursh) A.P. de Candolle. Common name: Pineland Tick-trefoil, Pinebarren Tick-trefoil. Phenology: Jul-Aug; Aug-Oct. Habitat: Longleaf pine sandhills, other dry woodlands. Distribution: S. NJ south to s. FL, west to w. LA. All reports from TX are based n misidentifications.

Intro: Erect perennial of sandhills and other dry woodlands such as turkey oak scrub.

Stems: Stems round or angled in cross-section, branched, smooth to minutely hairy.

Leaves: Leaves alternate, petiolate, divided into 3 thick-textured, linear leaflets that are 1-2 in. long each and sparsely hairy.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers in a stiff terminal panicle composed of several ascending branches and covered with hooked hairs; purplish-pink; about 1/4 in. long; bilaterally symmetric and with typical pea-flower shape, the erect banner petal with 2 whitish patches near the base.

Fruits: Fruit a flattened pod divided into 1-4 u-shaped segments and covered with hooked hairs that stick to clothing and fur.
