Eryngium integrifolium Walter. Savanna Eryngo. Phen: Aug-Oct. Hab: Pine savannas, pine flatwoods, seepages, swamps, wet meadows, other moist, nutrient-poor places. Dist: Se. VA (Greensville County) (Belden et al. 2004) and e. NC south to ne. FL and Panhandle FL, west to OK and TX, inland in c. TN.

Origin/Endemic status: Endemic

Taxonomy Comments: Variation within Eryngium integrifolium probably warrants taxonomic recognition; it is under study by John Kees, Derick Poindexter, and Alan Weakley. There may be as many as six entities warranting taxonomic recognition.

Intro: Erect perennial of savannas, pine flatwoods, seepages and other moist, nutrient-poor places.

Stems: Stems branched above, smooth.

Leaves: Leaves alternate, subsessile, oval to lance-shaped, 1-2 3/4 in. long, coarsely toothed; upper leaves smaller, nearly linear and sometimes weakly lobed.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers in thimble-shaped, compact heads less than 1/2 in. wide and resting on a whorl of stiff, spiny bracts; blue to greenish-blue (white in bud); less than 1/4 in. wide; tubular and consisting of 5 minute lobes, long blue stamens and a divided style.

Height: 1-2 ft.

plant sale text: Savanna Eryngo is found growing in low, wet areas in the coastal plain of North Carolina. It bears many small pale blue flowers in dense, bracted heads on upright stems. This species attracts a great variety of pollinators when in bloom. In flower, this species reaches a height up to 2 feet. Its handsome foliage also provides long-term interest in the garden. It thrives in average to wet soil in full sun.
