Festuca sciurea Nuttall. Common name: Squirrel-tail Fescue. Phenology: Mar-May. Habitat: Sandy roadsides, fields, disturbed areas. Distribution: S. NJ south to n. peninsular FL, west to TX, and north in the interior to MO.
Origin/Endemic status: Native
Taxonomy Comments: There may be question whether the Rafinesquian epithet applies here; moreover, when transferred into Festuca it may be blocked by the very similar Festuca elliottii.
