Ficus

Ficus aurea Nuttall. Common name: Strangler Fig; Golden Fig. Habitat: Hammocks, strand swamps. Often seen girdling bald cypress. Distribution: FL peninsula; West Indies; Mexico and Central America.

ID notes: Ficus aurea often spends the early stages of its life sending pendent aerial roots downward, eventually reaching the ground and establishing pillar-roots. The fig will then spend the remainder of its life growing inward and girdling its host, often persisting as a stand alone plant long after its host has been girdled to death.
