Leaves: Leaves opposite (may be a few alternate), in pairs at right angles to each other; short-petiolate; lance-shaped with rounded base; to 6 1/2 in. long; with 3 conspicuous veins; usually hairy on both surfaces; with sandpaper-like texture above.

Flowers: Composite flowers (heads) solitary or in small clusters; 2-3 in. wide; consisting of 8-15 yellow ray florets encircling a center disk of numerous yellow, tubular florets. Spreading, green, narrow, pointed bracts, with tips often reflexed, surround the base of each head.

Fruits: Fruit a brown, narrowly oval and flattened achene.
