Hieracium marianum Willdenow. Common name: Maryland Hawkweed. Phenology: May-Nov. Habitat: Dry forests, woodland margins, roadsides. Distribution: NH and ME west to OH, south to GA and AL.

Taxonomy Comments: Considered to derive from hybridization between H. gronovii Linnaeus and H. venosum Linnaeus. There is apparently no definite report from VA.

Leaves: Leaves basal and alternate on stem, oblong-lance-shaped, 1 1/2-5 in. long (reduced upward), vaguely toothed, basal leaves sometimes with purplish veins, hairy above.

Flowers: Composite flowers (heads) at ends of branches of a flattish, terminal cluster; heads 1/2-3/4 in. wide, consisting of multiple yellow ray florets with squared-off tips (no disk florets).
