Habitat: Stagnant to (less commonly) swiftly flowing waters of swamps pools, backwaters, blackwater streams, sometimes forming floating mats. Distribution: NY, IL, MO, and KS south to s. FL and se. TX; BC south to CA, AZ, Mexico, Central America, and South America.

Intro: Creeping, fleshy, aquatic to semi-aquatic perennial growing in stagnant to, less commonly, swiftly flowing waters of swamps pools, back waters and blackwater streams.
Stems: Stems thick, fleshy, floating or creeping, rooting at the nodes, pale green and smooth.
Leaves: Leaves alternate, petiolate, round to kidney-shaped, to 3 in. wide, palmately lobed, scallop-edged, lustrous green and smooth.
Inforescence:
Flowers: Flowers in stalked, round-topped umbels (4-10 flowers, about 1/2 in. wide) arising from leaf axils; greenish-white or greenish-yellow; minute with 5 spreading petals, 5 stamens and a divided style.
Fruits: Fruit a tiny achene with 5 blunt ridges.
