Hypericum gentianoides (Linnaeus) Britton, Sterns, & Poggenburg. Section: Brathys. Common name: Pineweed, Orange-grass, Orangeweed. Phenology: Jul-Oct. Habitat: Fields, rock outcrops, woodland borders, eroding areas, pond margins, pine flatwoods. Distribution: ME and ON west to MN, south to s. FL and TX.

Intro: Erect to ascending, bushy annual found on rock outcrops and in fields, woodland borders, eroding areas, pond margins and pine flatwoods.

Stems: Stems wiry, wing-angled, with many thread-like branches; main stem reddish brown and upper branches green.

Leaves: Leaves opposite, sessile, scale-like and tiny, closely pressed to stem or slightly angled outward.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers mostly sessile at branch tips and along branches at leaf nodes, yellow and less than 1/4 in. wide when open. Each flower consisting of 5 lance-linear, blunt petals, which open only in sunlight; 5 slightly shorter, narrower sepals; and an erect cluster of stamens and style in the center.

Fruits: Fruit a reddish-purple, slender-conical capsule.
