Krigia cespitosa (Rafinesque) K.L. Chambers. Common name: Opposite-leaf Dwarf-dandelion. Phenology: Late Mar-early Jun. Habitat: Fields, roadsides, disturbed places. Distribution: Se. VA and NE south to c. peninsular FL and TX.

Taxonomy Comments: K. gracilis (A.P. de Candolle) Shinners occurs in TX, OK, and LA; it is sometimes treated as K. cespitosa var. gracilis (A.P. de Candolle) K.L. Chambers, but is better considered as a species, as it is sympatric and generally distinct.

Intro: Erect annual of fields, roadsides and other disturbed places.
Stems: Stem arising from a winter rosette, branching from the base, smooth and often with a whitish coating; broken stems ooze milky sap.
Leaves: Leaves basal and more or less opposite on the stem, petiolate, linear-oblong, 1/2-5 in. long (reduced upward).
Inforescence:
Flowers: Composite flowers (heads) solitary at ends of branches, about 1/2 in. wide, consisting of 12-35 orange-yellow ray florets with squared-off, toothed tips. Narrow, green bracts surround the bell-shaped base of each head.
Fruits: Fruit a fluffy cluster of tufted achenes.
