*Mahonia bealei (Fortune) Carrière. Section: Longibracteatae. Common name: Leatherleaf Mahonia, Chinese Mahonia, Holly-grape. Phenology: Dec-Mar; May-Jul. Habitat: In deciduous forests in suburban areas, spread from plantings, not naturalized and invasive. Distribution: Native of China. Naturalizing widely (and increasingly aggressively) in the southeastern United States. Radford, Ahles, & Bell (1968) reported it as "a rare escape, Orange County, N.C."; this invasive is now in most counties across large parts of the southeastern United States, and expected to continue to spread and increase in abundance.
